Afghan Hound Club of Scotland 50th Anniversary Championship Show
Friday, 1 October 2021 (held over from 2020)

How wonderful to be invited to judge at this show, the AHCS has always been close to my heart. Many thanks to the Committee for the invitation and what a very well run show as always – and the celebratory cakes and other decorations were beautiful. Also thanks to my helpful and efficient stewards as well as the sporting exhibitors for their entries. My overall impression of the exhibits was good, I found no bad mouths but I have to say there were several exhibits rather underweight and a couple overweight. Some hounds moved rather close behind but I recognise that exercise at the best level is not easy to achieve at this time of year.

Veteran (3, 2 abs)

1.French's Palamedees Taboo At Zalmeerah. Shaded masked gold gentleman in fine condition. Balanced head with good eye shape, set onto excellent neck, good shoulder, excellent upper arm, deep chest and strong loin, good rear angulation. Moved steadily, has since retired from show duties, enjoy your retirement, fella!

Minor Puppy (No entries)

Puppy (3, 0 abs)

1.Stoker's Kenxtwen Tourmaline. Gold baby of nearly 12 months. Tall, rangy youngster with good head and dark eye, needs time to grow into himself. BPD & RBPIS

2.Davies' Rhajikhan Adrastus. Brindle, 11 months, another tall, rangy youngster who needs time to develop, rather high at the rear but will drop in time, I’m sure.

3.Russell & Richardson’s Jazzmeenah Wandering Star

Junior (3, 1 abs)

1.Hills & Thornton’s Absolute Afghan’s Djibouti At Karnak (imp Nor). Just out of puppy, black masked gold boy with balanced head and excellent eye. Good length of neck, very good shoulders, not quite matched by return of upper arm. Excellent depth of chest, short, strong loin, correct ring tail. Steady, somewhat bouncy movement.

2.Russell & Richardson’s Jazzmeenah Wandering Star Houndy black and silver, balanced head and good eye. Good shoulder, upper arm and ribcage. Somewhat excited on the move, so not easy to assess, needs to body up.

Yearling (1, abs)

Novice (1, 0 abs)

1.Russell & Richardson’s Jazzmeenah Wandering Star

Undergraduate (No entries)

Graduate (6, 1 abs)

1.Bartram & Perry's Gezancol Utter Chaos At Chardara. Lovely black and silver two year old who has it all! Excellent head and lovely dark eye. Good length of neck, excellent lay-back of shoulder and return of upper arm. Short, strong loin, excellent rear angulation and fallaway, correct tail set and ring completes the picture. Powered round the ring showing correct springy gait with great front extension and drive from behind, sure he will go far!

2.James & James’ Syrdarya Darjeeling Chai Of Simkhan Lovely self-masked gold lad with excellent head, slight Roman nose and well-shaped eye. Much of the description of the class winner also applies here, unfortunate to meet him in this class. Perhaps slightly over-excited on the move today but this boy will also go far.

3.French’s Trust Queen Buddha At Zalmeerah (imp Rus)

Post Graduate (5, 1 abs)

1.Gardner's Drishaun Said Tiger To Lily. Beautiful upstanding red brindle, balanced head with excellent eye giving true expression. Lean neck laid into very good shoulders with correct return of upper arm. Well sprung ribcage, deep chest, short square loin. Good length from hip to hock, well angulated rear assembly, good fallaway and tail set. Great drive on the move, using his quarters well. Very well presented and handled. Another on his way to the top. RCC

2.Mitchell & Smithson's Zandahar Xplosive Storm. Shaded masked cream brindle, rather more compact than 1. Excellent, balanced head, well arched neck, good shoulder and upper arm. Good chest and ribcage, good topline, excellent short, strong loin and rear angulation. Correct, springy gait with good extension and drive, great to see him becoming much more settled as he matures.

3.Neilly's Way Up Walker To Cloudside (imp Ita)

Mid Limit (5, 2 abs)

1.Anderson's Zandahar Tartan Xplorer JW. What a dog! Maturing well at three-and-a-half, upstanding gold grizzle in great condition. Well balanced head with excellent eye and good, strong underjaw lacking in many hounds these days. Long, lean neck set on terrific shoulders with matching return of upper arm, good spring of rib and nice deep chest. Strong topline, good loin and well angulated rear, good fallaway and correct ring tail. Outstanding, powerful movement, almost ready to explode but well controlled by his handler. Very well presented and in super coat. Sincerely hope this boy goes all the way! CC & BIS on agreement with my co-judge.

2.Moyes & Lockett-Davies’ Bryelis Rebel Heart JW. Another quality hound by the same sire as 1. Black and silver with balanced head correct eye shape and colour. Good neck, excellent shoulders and return of upper arm. Excellent level topline and good rear angulation with good turn of stifle, great tail set, tail with correct ring. Showed great spring and length of stride on the move, would like just a little more body but overall a lovely dog of great type.

3.French's Sitana Bijali Toofan At Zalmeerah

Limit (5, 1 abs)

1.Bovey’s Sitana Barisa Toofan Karianca. Beautiful tall, lean, pale gold boy with lovely head, correct eye shape and dark colour, good chiselling. Long neck set on excellent shoulders, deep chest with well sprung ribcage. Short loin, good rear angulation, good fallaway and tail with correct ring. A little hesitant on the move today (perhaps he didn’t like the floor?) but couldn’t deny his overall quality.

2.Neilly’s Cloudside Sun Lord. Well balanced black and tan with nice head and eye. Adequate length of neck into excellent shoulder and upper arm, deep chest with good ribcage and loin. Good rear assembly, fallaway and tail set. Steady mover.

3.Hunter's Neptune De Koulanger At Sulahmara JW (imp Fra)

Open (4, 0 abs)

1.Cullen’s Ch. Syrdarya Toffy Pop At Eweyisska. This lad needs no introduction from me! Cracking red brindle of excellent type with super, balanced head and lovely dark eye, strong arched neck leading to excellent lay-back of shoulder and return of upper arm. Deep chest, well-sprung ribcage with strong, short loin and super rear angulation. Good fallaway and tail with correct ring, moved with purpose - hard to fault and a worthy champion. BVIS

2.James & James' Sitana Aag Toofan. Shaded-masked silver with super head, eye and expression, nice chiselling. Excellent shoulder and return of upper arm, good chest and ribcage. Super short, square loin, good hind angulation and fallaway. Tail well set on, moved well. Should gain his title.

3.Drage’s Gilari Rosso Corsa.

Afghan Hound Club of Scotland  50th Anniversary Championship Show
Friday, 1 October 2021 (held over from 2020)

Well, it was a long time coming for this club but the wait was worth it ! A Golden Anniversary in all ways – congratulations to the club for such a splendid effort with gold everywhere. I thoroughly enjoyed my judging and appreciated the entry with some lovely hounds drawn from a wide array of types which made it all the more interesting. A great atmosphere throughout and I was also very pleased to be able to agree amicably with my co-judge on all the major awards without the need for a referee. Many thanks to exhibitors, my steward and the Scottish Club for a lovely day.

Veteran B (6/4)

1.Lawson-Ball’s Andizhan Charisma with Zarcar JW, well shaped head with dark eye, strong neck into good front assembly with excellent return of upper arm, good outline and rear angulation, holding her topline well on the move, excellent bone and large feet. 8 years old and of course masses of coat. A mature lady moving steadily with balance.

2.Waggett’s Just For You de Koulanger at Clenagh JW, at 7 years of age this golden girl had good body condition and held her topline well. Very attractive head and expression enhanced by her lovely beard , long neck into well placed shoulder, moderate return of upper arm, good bone and body, good length from hip to hock, moved steadily.

Puppy B (3/0)

1.Kirk-Vickers’ Geordele Time To Shine at Istani, 10 months and what a star, colourful black & tan, good shaped head with long skull and that prominent occiput, the darkest of well shaped eyes, but looking at and through me was hard because so much was exciting for this youngster. Long neck into well laid shoulder, elbow well under body. Good length of rib cage and short loin, well angled rear with good croup and low set ring tail. Superb muscle and body condition. Needed a whole field but managed to stay in the ring and moved exhuberantly with plenty of reach and drive. Best Bitch Puppy and BPIS with my co-judge.
2.Gunn’s Karagez Kartina Maslom at Zushkhan, 10 months and another black & tan. A well shaped skull and dark eye, a little more strength of underjaw would be good, well laid shoulders and return of upper arm, good body with short loin, good bend of stifle, sound bone and large feet. Did not co-operate with her handler and needs to grow in confidence but moved well with head and tail up.

3.Stevens and Squires’ Jazzmenah Wish Upon A Star at Tabordane.

Junior B (2/0)

1.Gilbert’s Altside Hot As Hell at Affietar, 16 months brindle hound, or should I say helicopter? Attractive head of moderate length but great expression and dark eyes with definite gleam in them, long neck into strong front assembly, good body with long rib cage and good depth of chest, short loin, good croup and low set tail. Good bone and large feet. Shown in impeccable condition, great muscle tone and abundant well-conditioned coat. Surprised her handler stayed on his feet and onward rather than upward was the challenge, but moved with power around the ring.

2.Mitchell & Thornton’s Absolute Afghan’s India at Karnak, 13 months golden girl. Heavily coated youngster with a good shaped head with very dark mask, good bite and strong underjaw, good deep chest, longer cast than 1 and topline could be firmer. Well set tail. Moved steadily and will no doubt gain in confidence with time.

Novice B (2/0)

1.Kirk-Vickers’ Geordele Time To Shine at Istani

2. Gunn’s Karagez Kartina Maslom at Zushkhan

Undergraduate B (3/1)

1.Kirk-Vickers’ Calamus Dirty Dancing at Istani, 2 years gold, this girl displayed a classic balanced outline, with a very pleasing head and expression, strong neck into well angulated front assembly, deep brisket and good rib cage, solid topline with good length of rib and short loin, good rear anglulation and strong hocks. She had a low set tail just missing the ring. This was all good and she had plenty of muscle but she was carrying a little too much weight and had been groomed using the knife and fork method. However she moved soundly and with a very light footfall and plenty of spring outmoving her handler at times.

2.Bird’s Cloudside Zarzuella at Ikusimokon, 2 years black and brindle, such an attractive head with well balanced skull and foreface, dark eyes and true expression of mild disinterest, good neck into well placed shoulder, moderate return of upper arm, good spring of rib and deep chest, short loin and good length from hip to hock. She moved steadily but needs a little more condition to achieve more positive movement and a stronger topline.

Graduate B (2/1)

1.Bastow’s Cloudside Muineira to Karandikar, 2 years black & brindle, such an attractive girl, very nice head with balance and strength, dark eye and good expression, long neck into very well angulated forehand, deep chest and good long ribcage with short loin, complementary well angulated rear quarters with strong hocks, low set ring tail. Moved soundly holding her topline well but more is possible I feel. Good bone and body condition and coat presented really well.

Postgraduate B (3/0)

1.Hedge’s Unstoppable Happy Go Lucky, 2 years black & brindle, what a girl, the name says it all. Very nice head of moderate length but completely balanced, good strong underjaw, strong neck into very well angulated front, elbows well under body, deep brisket and good ribcage, short loin to well angulated rear quarters, good croup and low set ring tail. Powerful mover with springy pasterns used to advantage, long stride but steps lightly and with style of high order. This lady can only improve and I will watch her progress.

2.Cullen’s Cloudside Sevillana at Eweyisska, 2 years black & brindle, another very pleasing head with dark eye and good underjaw, strong neck into well placed shoulders, well bodied with good brisket and deep chest, short strong loin, good croup, plenty of length from hip to hock and feet flat on the ground. This lady moved very soundly but rather conservatively today – she has a good hound outline and I am sure would enjoy the great outdoors. Impressive.

3.Stevens & Squires’ Jazzmenah Bana Moonbow at Tabordane.

Mid Limit B (2/1)

1.Nisbet & Forrester’s Pramya Hot But Not Blonde at Finix JW, 3 years black & cream, quite a girl, lovely head with good length of skull, correct stop and long foreface with plenty of detail, dark eye and strong underjaw. Good length of neck into well angulated front with long upper arm, body just right with good spring of rib and deep chest, strong topline, square loin and rear angulation to match the front. Good fallaway to low set ring tail. Excellent body condition. Strong springy pasterns. Moves with great front reach and light springy step covering a lot of ground. She has masses of coat and this needs some care. An impressive hound. Pleased to award her the RCC.

Limit B (7/1)

1.L&C O’Donnell’s Drishaun Faith Is Like A Lily for Javidan JW, 3 years brindle, this lady stands over just the right amount of ground to present a classic profile outline of the afghan hound. Her head is well balanced with detailed foreface and well-shaped dark eye, her strong neck leads into a well placed shoulder and good sloping upper arm, body deep and just right amount of spring of rib, solid topline and short loin. Good bend of stifle matching front angles and strong springy pasterns. Good fallaway to low set ring tail. Nothing about this girl is overdone but it is a balanced picture throughout. Moving she uses her front well and drives cleanly from behind with strong flexible hocks showing a clean pair of heels. As with the best of afghans she has to be ready to co-operate but on this Golden day she moved with her head and tail up and a style of high order. I was delighted to award her the CC and RBIS with my co-judge.

2.Nisbet & Forrester’s Zandahar Xclusively for Finix JW, 3 years black & cream, a strong girl with lots of quality, well balanced head, dark eye, long neck leading to well angled forehand. Good bone and huge feet, all four of which were flat on the ground. Solid body with good topline and short loin. Rear quarters matched the front with good length from hip to hock. Good croup to low set tail. Moving she covered a lot of ground with sound strides, aided by the impressive amount of muscle she had. Well presented and a credit to her owners.

3.E&I James’s Gilari Vermillion Venus.

Open B (4/0)

1.Bastow’s Ch Cloudside Flashlight at Karandikar, 6 years black & brindle, this girl is well made with a long foreface and punishing underjaw, good neck into a front assembly with good angles and long upper arm, solid body with good rib cage and short loin, fallaway to ring tail. Good bend of stifle, bone and feet. Her excessive coat can mask her outline but she is presented impeccably. She moved steadily with all four feet landing in the right place but rather lost interest in the Challenge – typical afghan.

2.Link’s Ned/Int Ch Popov’s Bora Bora at Orashan, 7 years golden girl, nice head with balance to skull and foreface, I would prefer a more triangular appearance to the eye. Well laid shoulder and good return of upper arm, good bone throughout and large feet. Strong body with deep chest and short loin. Good rear angulation. Very enthusiastic mover which can cause her to roach slightly with all the excitement. She is a short coupled bitch and can move soundly and true if she could just count to 5 before launching herself down the ring. A joyful lady who I was so pleased to meet.

3.Beck’s Ir Ch Zilbec Zilanthe.

Champion B (3/0)

1.Appleby, Moon, Edwards and Mulvaney’s Ir Ch Affietar Glen Isla, 5 years golden lady. Very pleasing head with well shaped eye and details to muzzle which enhanced her expression. Good neck into well laid shoulder and good return of upper arm. Nice amount of spring of rib and deep chest. Excellent bone and large feet. Good length of ribcage and square loin, good fallaway. Very well muscled. Good bend of stifle and strong hocks. She moved with light steps covering the ground and holding her topline well. A very attractive girl.

2.Hitch’s Ch Zhivias Sunrise Surprise of Zendushkas, 7 years golden, a well deserved Champion with a lovely head of excellent shape and balance and enhanced by shaded mask and dark eyes. Her angulation front and rear complement each other, and her strong pasterns give her the ability to move with a light springy step. Good body and loin with good fallaway to ring tail complete the picture. Moved steadily and true.

3.Gunn’s Lux/Int Ch Amal Salang Hey I’m The Star at Zushkhan.

Afghan Hound Club of Scotland  Championship Show 2021
Dogs – AM Show

Many thanks to the committee for the invitation to judge dogs at this year’s Championship Show. It was very much appreciated that you managed to put on such a great double show due to the many Covid restrictions and all that was entailed with rescheduling last year’s Anniversary show. Thank you to the exhibitors for bringing your beautiful hounds for me to assess, I can only imagine the work you had to do to have them all presented so well on day 3 of shows in Scottish October weather!
After so long away from shows I was expecting some dogs to be out of practice or youngsters to be overawed by the experience but that was not the case. Several did find the mats slippery and the coloured floor tapes distracting but I was able to see enough from every dog to find the typical Afghan movement that I search for. While coats were immaculate it was sad to find several who were either very thin or overweight and out of muscle condition. Teeth were clean and thankfully I didn’t find any bad mouths this time.

Veteran Dog (5,2abs)

This is always a favourite class of mine, Afghans can take years to fully mature so veteran always provides the prospect of beautiful dogs and today didn’t disappoint.
1st. CH Chinzaes In Comes The Judge CW18 - Best Veteran in Show – Striking black and cream dog with the most profuse and well presented coat. I loved his movement, long neck into steady topline and long lean beautiful head.

2nd. Multi CH Calamus Mediator ShCM (imp) - At a mere hours before his 10th birthday this dog looked years younger, hardly any grey on his muzzle, moving well and looking every inch the Champion that he is.

3rd. Palameedees Taboo at Zalmeerah

Puppy Dog (3,0 abs)

1st.  Rhakikhan Adrastus – Best Puppy Dog – Statuesque brindle dog with the most beautiful head and eye. He moved steadily with good head and tail carriage, a very promising puppy.

2nd.  Kenxtwen Tourmaline – This black masked gold dog was nowhere near as well schooled as the winner but he’s a puppy.  and I was able to see enough of his movement when he settled. A very short coupled dog, lovely head with a well carried ring tail.

3rd Jazmeenah Wandering Star

Junior Dog (3,1 abs)

1st.  Jazmeenah Wandering Star – Black and cream puppy who showed much better in this class, he has balanced movement, a lovely outline, super shiney natural saddle, prominent hip bones and good fallaway, long well carried tail. However he was very thin.

2nd.  Absolute Afghan’s Djibouti at Karnak (imp Nor) TAF – This exuberant black masked gold made me smile, he was having a great time and I doubt his tail stopped wagging. Balanced angles, level topline, shown in great body and muscle condition.

Yearling Dog (1,0 abs)

1st.  Khamis No Masked Required – Appropriately named self masked pale gold. So much to like about this masculine yet elegant male. For me he excels on the move with long, raking strides but he also has a lovely head with chiselling and great pigmentation, dark expressive eyes, natural saddle and well carried tail.

Novice Dog (1,0 abs)

1st Jazmeenah Wandering Star

Graduate Dog (5, 0 abs)

1st.  Syrdarya Darjeeling Chai of Simkhan – Dog CC & Best in Show – Still full of the playfulness of youth he had the whole hall laughing as he decided to bounce and slide around the corners in the BIS ring. So Afghan. I don’t think I’d change much about this elegant self masked red dog. – he has such beautiful balanced movement, great outline without exaggeration, gorgeous head with dark triangular eyes, roman nose, chiselling. Good neck flowing into a level topline, natural saddle and a well carried ring tail. I can’t wait to see him when he’s fully mature.

2nd.  Trust Queen Buddha at Zalmeerah (imp Russia) - Immaculate black masked silver dog of a totally different type, he has the most beautiful head and expression, level topline, good fallaway and hip bones.

3rd.  El Roalito Live The Dream of Victory at Tabordane (imp)

Post Graduate Dog (6,0 abs)

1st.  Drishaun Said Tiger To Lily – Dog Reserve CC – Pristine Brindle who has the most beautiful outline – flowing and balanced. His ground covering movement, when settled, showed plenty of reach and drive – again I use that word balanced. I loved his head and expression, masculine but not a bit of coarseness. A rather special dog shown in great body and gleaming with condition.

2nd.  Tulak Rebel In The Rye at Dargai – Self masked pale gold dog who is finer all through than 1 with a deep natural saddle, lovely head and expression, good pigmentation, lovely shape, great length of stride and well carried tail.

3rd.  Zandahar Explosive Storm

Mid Limit Dog ((3,1 abs)

1st.  Khorinya Habutai Silk – Houndy, self masked cream dog, immaculate coat presentation and good body and muscle tone. I really liked his movement and flowing outline. He has the most beautiful eyes and expression.

2nd.  Sitana Bijali Toofan at Zalmeerah – Another lovely dog, black masked gold of a different type. He too has an attractive head and expression, level topline and well carried tail. He took time to settle but showed enough of his good movement for me to assess.

Limit Dog (5,0 abs)

1st.  Sitana Barisa Toofan Karianca – This elegant black masked gold really excels on the move, so light and effortless. He has a masculine but not coarse head, with correctly shaped dark eyes, great depth and substance, level topline and good fallaway. Lots to admire.

2nd.  Drishaun Fair As A Lily – A stylish self masked cream dog, slightly smaller all through yet still masculine. Good ground covering movement with a well carried ring tail. Shown in super body and muscle condition.

3rd.  Cloudside Sun Lord

Open Dog (5,0 abs)

1st.  Sitana Aag Toofan – This shaded masked cream dog won this quality class on his movement, he has a great front and uses it well, showing reach and drive. He’s smaller than his brothers here today but he was still masculine and I liked him very much.

2nd.  CH Syrdarya Toffy Pop at Eweyisska – I loved the outline of this dark brindle dog, flowing from his beautiful head along his level topline to his well carried ring tail. Moved soundly and with enthusiasm.

3rd.  CH Drishaun The Vampire Lily Via Gothika JW – completed a trio of elegant hounds. A pleasure to judge them.
